Occupational Health and Safety

USW Local 1-207 takes Occupational Health and Safety very seriously.

Committees

Your Local Union bargains for joint OH&S committees in our operations.  When we have elected committees, we provide training opportunities at Local and District schools throughout Alberta so that the elected OH&S committee members can effectively address OH&S issues in their operations.

Conferences and Seminars

The Local Executive Board sends members from our operations who are active in their OH&S committees to various OH&S related conferences and seminars.  The USW District and National, as well as the IWA Council of the USW put on safety conferences throughout the year.  As well, the Alberta Workers Health Centre has put on conferences in the past that have been attended by our members.

WCB

Workers in Alberta are covered by Workers Compensation Board insurance (WCB), which is a no-fault insurance that provides workers with income loss protection when they are injured on the job.

Oftentimes, our members have a difficult time getting the benefits they are entitled under WCB, so we employ a WCB Advocate who is there to assist our members in filing appeals on decisions made by the WCB.  If you require the services of the WCB Advocate, this can be accessed by making a request through your operation chairperson or through the business agent that services your operation.  Once such a request is made, the advocate will contact you to discuss your claim.

You can find some links relating to OH&S on our links page.
